Emma Watson made a potent call for breaking down gender categories as she scooped up the gender-neutral film acting prize at the MTV Movie and TV Awards, in a speech that was broadcast on Sunday night.

An award “that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience, ” Ms. Watson, who won for her performance in “Beauty and the Beast, ” said in her acceptance speech.

“MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone, but to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes; and that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories, ” she said.

(Ms. Watson’s speech referred to this as the “first ever” occasion that an award show had combined the performance categories, but the MTV Movie Awards have in fact done so on two occasions in the past, in 2006 and 2007.)

In the ceremony’s other gender-neutral acting category, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown won the award for best actor in a TV show ahead of the likes of Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke and Atlanta star Donald Glover. Brown thanked Stranger Things showrunners the Duffer brothers for creating “a badass female iconic character that I’ve got the honour to play”. Stranger Things also won the award for show of the year, while Beauty and the Beast was awarded movie of the year.

Jharrel Jerome and Ashton Sanders were awarded best kiss for the gay love story Moonlight. Receiving the award, the pair acknowledged the groundbreaking role of the film.

“This award is bigger than Jharrel and I, ” Sanders said. “This represents more than a kiss. This is for those who feel like the others, the misfits – this represents us.”

“It’s safe to say that it is OK for us young performers, especially us minority performers, to step out of the box … and do whatever it takes to tell the story and do whatever it takes to make a change, ” Jerome added.

Other winners at the ceremony included Logan stars Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen, who were awarded best duo, and Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya, who won the next generation award. Hidden Figures received the gong for best fight against the system, an award that examines how “honest, well-told stories lead to important discussions, lead to understanding, and can lead to a changed nation”.
