Emma Watson Best Actress Award

Emma Watson made a potent call for breaking down gender categories as she scooped up the gender-neutral film acting prize at the MTV Movie and TV Awards, in a speech that was broadcast on Sunday night.

An award “that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience, ” Ms. Watson, who won for her performance in “Beauty and the Beast, ” said in her acceptance speech.

“MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone, but to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes; and that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories, ” she said.

(Ms. Watson’s speech referred to this as the “first ever” occasion that an award show had combined the performance categories, but the MTV Movie Awards have in fact done so on two occasions in the past, in 2006 and 2007.)

Millie Bobby Brown, the 13-year-old star of Netflix’s show “Stranger Things, ” won the gender-neutral award for best acting in a television series.

Others were less sympathetic. Also on Monday morning, the conservative British television personality Piers Morgan, a host of “Good Morning Britain, ” lampooned Ms. Watson and the award, which he described as part of an “utterly ridiculous” culture of political correctness.

MTV’s prizes underwent an overhaul this year that included scrapping the male and female acting categories, and renaming what was previously called the MTV Movie Awards. The winners were chosen by public vote. “Beauty and the Beast” won the top film category, and “Stranger Things” won the top TV prize.

An earlier version of this article attributed an erroneous distinction to Emma Watson’s win of the gender-neutral acting prize. MTV awarded gender-neutral acting prizes at its movie awards show in 2006 and 2007; this was not the first-ever such award. The former Harry Potter star was crowned Best Actor in the awards’ first gender free category – but she bored fans with her lengthy acceptance speech.

Watson was awarded the accolade for her role as Belle in Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast, which won Best Movie, and took a moment to speak about the significance of receiving the honour.

She said: “Thank you. Firstly, I feel I have to say something about the award itself. The first acting award in history that doesn't separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience.

“MTV's move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone. But to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes. And that doesn't need to be separated into two different categories.”

She also made a shout out to Asia Kate Dillon, saying she was equally as honoured to accept the gong from Dillon who became the first non-binary actor to play a character who identifies the same way when she played Taylor Mason in Billions.

“This is very meaningful to me, ” she said. “Both to be winning the award and to be receiving it from you, Asia [Kate Dillon]. Thank you for educating me in such—in such an inclusive, patient, and loving way. Thank you so much.”

But fans mocked her lengthy speech, which also saw her encourage people to be more like Belle, and thank a long list of people for giving her the opportunity to play the Disney princess.

One Twitter user posted: “Emma Watson is giving this profound speech. Girl. It’s the #MTVAwards ... not the Oscars. Sit down already (sic).”

She continued, Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits. This is very meaningful to me—both to be winning the award and to be receiving it from you...in such an inclusive, patient and loving way. Thank you so much.

And noting that it was pretty terrifying, she explained why she felt she won the award due to her portrayal of Belle.

[Belle's] curiosity and passion for knowledge and her desire for more in life were ground for alienation, Watson explained. I loved playing someone who didn't listen to any of that. I'm so proud to be part of a film that celebrates diversity, literacy, inclusion, joy, and love the way that this one does.

I want to thank every single person who voted for me. Thank you so much, she said. Lastly I want to thank anyone and everyone who had anything to do with giving me this opportunity. And, accompanying me on the journey. You know who you are. I can't thank you enough.
