Emma Watson’s first major film role since the end of the Harry Potter series met with a lukewarm box office response, after taking only £47 in its opening weekend.
The Colony, in which Watson plays a woman who tries to rescue her husband from a religious cult in rural Chile, was released in just five cinemas last Friday, with distributors encouraging fans to stream the film via video on demand services instead.
Figures released by the British Film Institute show that the film made only £47 in box office takings over the weekend, from the three cinemas that reported sales figures to Rentrak, the measurement agency.

The film is only available at theatres operated by Reel Cinemas, in Burnley, Widnes, Fareham, Hull and York. Ticket prices at the venues suggest that only seven people paid to see the film.
Directed by Oscar winner Florian Gallenberger, The Colony deals with life under General Pinochet’s Chile. Critics have dubbed it “silly and overwrought” but “of some value as a quasi-historical footnote”.
One reviewer wrote: “Emma Watson picks a stinker with this clumsy, ‘Argo’-ish political thriller. It’s fictional but based on an actual German cult led by Nazi paedophile Paul Schäfer.

Signature Entertainment, the film’s distributor, insisted that it was unfair to focus on ticket sales, as the film had been intended for release via online streaming services, and had been shown in a limited number of cinemas purely for promotional reasons.
Sources at the company said that critics tended to disregard films that were released on what was once known as a “straight to video” basis, adding that the distributor had placed The Colony in a handful of cinemas to ensure it was “given the recognition it deserves”.

A spokesman for the company said: “The Colony is a film Signature are proud to bring to the UK market. This important film touches upon a buried part of Chilean and German history and we are proud to bring this part of history to light in the UK.
“Furthermore we wanted to ensure the title was accessible to everyone by releasing it simultaneously in limited screens and on demand - allowing consumers to enjoy the movie in any environment they wish.”

Emma Watson, The Graduate
“To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process, ” she continued.
