The classic tale of a beautiful young woman who sees past the beastly exterior of a cursed prince has been adapted numerous times, not just in animated form but also as a musical, TV shows in 1987 and 2012, and the Meat Loaf video for 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)'.
Disney's been flirting with an adaptation of the story since 2009, though initially it was planned as a film version of the Broadway musical.
Emma Watson will play Belle, the woman who is taken to live in the Beast's castle. It's a casting decision pretty much everyone was happy with, including Paige O'Hara who voiced Belle in the 1991

's Bard The Bowman Luke Evans stars as Belle's suitor Gaston. Disney has revived some of the late Howard Ashman's lyrics to 'Gaston' that were considered too risqué for the original animation, so expect an even more obnoxious take on the villain.
There's a quality voice cast on board too, bringing to life the enchanted tableware who live in the Beast's palace as his domestic staff.

Ewan McGregor provides the pipes for Lumiere, the candlestick, Emma Thompson is Mrs Potts the Teapot, while Sir Ian McKellen is Cogsworth the clock.
2017 is an adaptation of the 1991 Disney animation and so will broadly follow the plot of that film, which itself was loosely based on the French fairytale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.
The Beast was a prince, cursed for his arrogance by an old woman who he refused to help, via an enchanted rose. He's transformed into a creature and will have to remain so forever unless he can find true love before the rose's last petals fall.

He lives in a big old castle surrounded by his former serving staff who have been transformed into household objects. (Bit harsh on them.)
Belle is a smart, independent young woman who's being aggressively pursed by Gaston, who she repeatedly rejects. One day her dad Maurice gets lost in the forest and stumbles into the Beast's castle. He detains him but Belle offers to swap, leading to romance between the two.
They're also putting a bit of a feminist twist on Belle's backstory – which should come as no surprise considering Watson personal record. And no, she won't be wearing a corset.
Did Emma Watson Sing In The New Beauty And The Beast Movie?
. I was like, 'Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn't fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?'
So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.
Like the animated Belle, Watson's version is also very bookish, and Watson says she has something of a spiritual link to her most recognisable character, Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter franchise.

It's interesting, actually, the last day that we finished on set was the anniversary of the day I was cast as Hermione, she said.
Someone had sent me an email to say that. I felt this strange sense of completion or full circle. I did feel they were spiritually linked in some way, for sure.

The Internet Has Some Thoughts About Emma Watson's Belle Doll
It'll be a musical featuring songs from the animated feature - and Emma Watson for one is a bit terrified of singing.
He's confused about what he wants. It's somebody who's just realising that he has these feelings, he added. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it.
And that's what has its pay-off at the end, which I don't want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.
Beauty And The Beast' Shows It's Time To Bring Back Dubbing
It's a first for Disney and something fans had been asking for for a while. Not everyone is overjoyed by the inclusion though - a cinema in Alabama has decided not to show the film while Russia has classified it as 16+.
We started off with just a teeny, sneak-peek teaser which offers glimpses of the Beast's house (which incidentally, based on the cartoon, would set you back about £15 million now according to estate agents) and a brief exchange between Lumiere and Cogsworth, before offering us a peak at Belle's brow.
A sizzling table-read teaser with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens was released ahead of that, giving up a little taste of what's in store – it's bristling with sexual tension!

She’s about to star as the heroine of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, but post-Potter she has received more plaudits for her activism than her acting
I t may seem strange that one of the most anticipated films of 2017 should be a live-action remake of a Disney cartoon about Stockholm syndrome, but Beauty and the Beast has already built up the kind of fan base that is normally reserved for rebooted sci-fi franchises and adaptations of erotic bestsellers. When the first trailer went online in November, it was viewed a record 127m times in 24 hours, beating the previous leaders in that particular field, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Fifty Shades Darker. Stranger still, 27m of those views were on the Facebook page of the film’s star, Emma Watson.
Emma Watson Perfect For Beauty And The Beast: Bill Condon
That figure might suggest that the 26-year-old who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series is now a bona fide superstar. But Watson’s celebrity status is slightly more complicated. As a Hollywood player, she isn’t going to give Jennifer Lawrence or Scarlett Johansson sleepless nights, but as an actor-activist she has the kind of influence that would have been unimaginable a generation ago.
For proof that Watson isn’t yet an A-lister, you just have to glance at her filmography since she hung up her Gryffindor robes. Broadly speaking, she has taken supporting roles in ensemble projects, such as Simon Curtis’s My Week with Marilyn and Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, and above-the-title roles in films that vanished without trace. Alejandro Amenábar’s repressed-memory chiller Regression didn’t recoup its $20m budget, and Colonia (AKA The Colony) pulled in a grand total of £47 in its opening weekend in the UK. Meanwhile, she turned down the title role in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, and accepted then dropped out of La La Land, thus handing Emma Stone the part that may well win her a best actress Oscar. In the years between Harry Potter and Beauty and the Beast, in other words, Watson was better known for films she wasn’t in than for films she was.

Disney's Live Action Movie Of
In contrast, Kristen Stewart followed her stint in the Twilight series by embracing arthouse cinema and being embraced right back: she was the first American female actor to win a César award for her performance in Clouds of Sils Maria. And Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, has grabbed every possible acting opportunity, from big-budget capers (Now You See Me 2) to indie curios (Swiss Army Man), from television (A Young Doctor’s Casebook) to theatre (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead). Compared to them, Watson is barely trying.
But there is more on her mind than acting. Having stepped away from the business to study for an English degree at Brown University in Rhode Island, she now spends as much time on feminism as she does on films. In 2014, she became a UN Women goodwill ambassador; in 2015, she was named on the Time 100 list of world’s most influential people, and last year she continued to make headlines by, for example, leaving feminist books around the London Underground system.
None of that may appear very remarkable: Watson
