Why Is Emma Watson Considered To Be A Great Role Model?

“The obvious choice is my own mum. She was a single working mother. She is also a type 1 diabetic so seeing her strength and resilience was really inspiring growing up.”

She went on to explain that her mother played a crucial role in teaching her that her thoughts, opinions and knowledge were far more powerful than her looks:

I think she instilled in me – particularly in my teenage years when I was feeling insecure and confused about what my purpose was – she really instilled in me that what I was thinking and what I was doing and what I was saying were ultimately infinitely more important than my physical appearance.

Emma Watson Quote: When People Call Me A Role Model It Puts The

Yet while the actress and activist’s admirable thoughtfulness might seem effortless, she admits that being a role model remains a stressful part of her life. As she explains to Jessica Chastain in the latest issue of Interview, no matter how much she does right, there's always the chance that she'll let people down. When people call me a role model it puts the fear of god into me, because I feel like I'm destined to fail, she says.

That's an understandable reaction from Emma, to be sure, given that for all of her positive work, she's not immune to the ire of critics. Just recently, she caught flak for defending her right to appear in a braless photo shoot, not so much because people disagreed with her (though that line of outrage had its own wave too), but because people found her defense at odds with a 2014 interview in which she questioned the male voyeuristic experience of Beyoncé's self-titled album. Deserved or not, Emma inevitably finds her every action and comment facing scrutiny, so it's no surprise that she's wary of embracing the position that makes it so.

To combat her apprehension about being a role model, Emma attempts to maintain as much of a private self as possible. The story of my life has been of public interest, which is why I've been so passionate about having a private identity, she says. And she is getting even more serious about setting up barriers between what's just for her and what she'll share with the world, revealing, I set even more boundaries than I had before between my public and my private lives. Emma was motivated by her upcoming role in
