Emma Watson Netflix

The Emma Watson/Tom Hanks tech thriller The Circle, about a young woman who discovers the internet corporation she works for is plotting to engineer a global surveillance state, is being quietly dumped on Netflix in the UK, without any advance promotion on the service's home page.

While the streaming service is (somewhat understandably) pushing this week's debut of their star-studded direct-to-Neflix sci-fi adventure Okja, The Circle's June 30 debut has barely caused a ripple, joining similar projects that have largely died a death upon premiering on Netflix, from Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore to the Nicholas Hoult war drama Sand Castle to the Rooney Mara/Robert Redford sci-fi allegory The Discovery.

Based on the novel by Dave Eggers, The Circle opened to dismal reviews when it debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, The Wrap claiming it takes a valid concern about lack of privacy in the internet age and turns it into a hyperbolic and finally laughable melodrama.

The film grossed just $20 million at the US box office, beaten in its opening weekend by the gigolo comedy How to Be a Latin Lover, despite studio EuropaCorp heavily promoting the film's notable cast, which also includes John Boyega, Karen Gillan,  Boyhood's Ellar Coltrane and the late Bill Paxton.

Oddly, The Circle is still receiving a cinema release in countries including France and Australia, with Emma Watson this month attending an array of promotional appearances in Paris to promote the film.

The Circle isn't the first high-profile A-list flop to quietly appear on the streaming service after skipping a UK cinema release. Several months after it grossed just $21 million at the US box office, the UK release of Cameron Crowe's critically-maligned romantic comedy Aloha was swiftly axed, studio Universal cutting their losses and selling off the film's rights to Netflix for an undisclosed sum.

This was despite the fact that the film featured a starry cast consisting of Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Bill Murray.
