Emma Watson Nowling

Police haven't been able to make sense out of her death, but they have been able to make her dream come true.

The 7-year-old Belleville girl died last week when a man with apparent mental illness lashed out at her and her mother, shooting them both outside the Taylor Sportsplex before turning the gun on himself.

Shooting

A crowd of several hundred sympathetic strangers gathered with Emma's family Thursday night for a vigil outside the downriver sports facility where the shooting occurred.

Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi told the crowd Emma, who attended South Arbor Charter Academy in Ypsilanti, loved singing, dancing, Minecraft and soccer.

But then, (Emma's father, Shane Nowling) told me why. He said Emma wanted to be a police officer when she grew up.

Because of that, Sclabassi said, and because of the fondness that this little girl now holds in the heart of the Taylor Police Department, she and Mayor Rick Sollars made Emma an honorary Taylor police officer, presenting a plaque -- and an attached pair of handcuffs -- to the family.

All the emails and texts that we've received from hundreds of people, donations -- it's felt in our hearts, she said. We will get through this. It's rough. But we will get through this by the grace of God.

Police said Timothy Obeshaw, 57, of Taylor, fired shots into their car as they tried to drive home. He then shot and killed himself.

It doesn't make sense, said Jarrad Vroman, 18, of Lincoln Park, who plays hockey at the Sportsplex and attended the vigil with his entire Belle Tire under-18 team.

The doctors have said they're not quite sure how she has survived her injuries, but in talking to her family, they don't doubt it for a bit, the chief said.

“I can’t imagine how difficult this is” for the family, Taylor’s mayor, Rick Sollars, told the crowd of more than 200 well-wishers.

Emma and her mother, Sharon Elizabeth Watson, 37, were shot Dec. 3 in the Sportsplex parking lot by a family friend who had recently lived in their Belleville home. Timothy Obeshaw, 57, then turned the gun on himself.

He seemed to be on good terms with the family just hours before. Emma had even run up to Obeshaw during the soccer practice and given him a hug on the sideline.

Addressing the crowd on Thursday night, Taylor Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said she struggled to think of any tragedy in the city’s recent history that had impacted the community so immensely.

Emma

And because Emma had recently expressed a hope of becoming a police officer — and even asked for handcuffs for Christmas — Sclabassi unveiled a certificate that made Emma an honorary member of the Taylor Police Department. Also included in the frame: a pair of handcuffs.

Sclabassi told the crowd more about Emma’s life. She was an energetic child with three siblings who loved the video game Minecraft, soccer and especially the outdoors. She had recently taken a hunting trip with her father and spotted deer in the distance more often than her father did, Sclabassi told the crowd.

Members of Emma’s family did not speak at the event except for Emma’s grandmother, identified only as Pam, who acknowledged the death had taken a heavy toll on the family.

“We know that we will see Emma again, ” she said. “It’s rough, but we will get through this by the grace of God.”

Emma's mother,  Sharon Watson, is still in the hospital as of tonight, and her doctors are surprised and relieved by her progress from her injuries, Sclabassi said.

Taylor police have not released a motive in the shooting but have said that Obeshaw was likely unstable and may have thought someone was trying to perform mind control on him.

After the memorial, the girls on Emma’s team signed a shirt that they presented to her father, Shane Nowling. Emma’s soccer coach, Dominic Scicluna, told reporters that he had spent days since the shooting wondering endlessly whether the team could have done anything to prevent the shooting. When shots were fired at the Taylor Sportsplex on Dec. 3, 7-year-old Emma Watson Nowling was killed, her mother was seriously wounded and family, friends and many who didn’t even know the two were left hurt to the core.

But the chaotic incident at the Sportsplex cut short not only Emma’s dream of someday being a police officer, but also every other dream she had,

Emma and her mother, 37-year-old Sharon Watson of Belleville, were shot by 57-year-old Timothy Obeshaw as they sat inside their car in the parking lot.

The turn of events sent shockwaves through the Downriver area and beyond as news spread from the hospital that Emma, the little girl who loved to sing and dance, had died and her mother’s life was hanging in the balance.

Vigil For 'an Amazing Girl'

No one suspected there would be gunfire or they would leave with emotional scars that may very well last a lifetime, but both of those things happened.

She spoke to the tearful crowd, talking about how Emma found a way to balance being a rough-and-tumble tomboy with being a dainty little girl.

It was a move that touched the little girl’s parents, grandmother and many others. Her dad, Shane Nowling, said Emma even wanted a pair of handcuffs, reflecting on her budding love for law enforcement.

Dominic Scicluna, Emma’s coach and a co-owner of Waza FC soccer school, is one of many people holding on to the value of friendships and life in general a little tighter because of Emma.

Since the shooting, Scicluna said, without taking a lesson out of this to change what needs to be “fixed” in one’s life, the experience would overwhelm him with sadness.

After having to deal with yet another recent death, that of a lifelong friend who was a Detroit firefighter and was killed in a home invasion, Scicluna said he is left with the challenge to find some form of “peace of mind and clarity in this world of organized chaos.”

He said all he and others can do is reflect on their lives, and if there are things that can be fixed, fix them before you go to bed.

Scicluna encourages people to reflect and reach out and do little things that will have a big impact on someone’s life, like saying “thank you, ” for a past gesture or “call me if you need me, ” to someone who might be struggling.

“Forgive people, ” Scicluna said. “Kids eventually find a way to move on a little easier than adults. Grown-ups get stuck. Right now, I’m learning from them.”

Although Emma was part of a developmental program in the Waza school, Scicluna said they were trying to motivate her to go after her dreams, something he said he is twice as motivated to do as a result of feeling her loss.

An outpouring of love was shown for Emma again as familiar faces and even strangers were compelled to attend to express their condolences and make a donation.

“It rocked the whole community and we felt inspired, ” said Beck Yanos, a guitar player who helped organize the event with fellow musicians Tim McMahon and Andy Ball. “We felt we had to do something.”
