Emma Watson Met Gala 2023

Emma Watson has been a lot more publicly visible this year than she has in previous years, but she still chose to skip this year's Met Gala. Watson was not photographed on tonight's red carpet. She hasn't been photographed out in the last couple days, as the star manages to keep a low profile when she wants to keep one.

Watson was far more active on her Instagram this April, though. Watson revealed on the platform this past weekend that she and her brother had launched a gin line. She also reflected on her April 15 birthday, about turning 33, and how much her life had changed privately over the last three years.

This is 33. Holy moly. Before 29 I hadn’t even heard of a Saturn Return as a concept. Let’s just say that now I am well acquainted. 😅🪦⚰️🧟‍♀️☄️🪐🪂💥💣🌋 I stepped away from my life - I learned to surf (badly), 🏄‍♀️ I rode some horses (🏇that went better), I did a lot of therapy (YESS 💪😍 therapy!). My brother and I joined forces @renaisspirits. I adopted Sofia in Mexico, who seems to be an angel not a dog 👼. We filmed a Harry Potter reunion⚡️. I said goodbye to my Grandma and Grandpa. I retraced my steps. I started a women’s environmental investment fund 📈. I played Pickleball with @sugarrayleonard and I even played golf and then tried to make all of my girlfriends learn too. I cut my thumb nail off on both hands trying to cook for myself and then was only able to do things one handed for months 🙈🔪👩‍🍳👋. I felt really sad and really pissed off about a lot of things. I learned more about love and being a woman (💃❤️ ). It took me three years but I have finally figured out a daily practice and can actually keep it for more than a few days in a row. I burned some things down 🏙🔥🧯 . I eat green things now 🌱 ! I got obsessed with making Squarespace websites. I directed my first commercial 🎥.These pictures were actually taken on my birthday last year, but I wasn’t ready to come out of my Covid Cocoon. Today I feel 🦋🦋🦋🦋Thank you to the witches in my coven who were so pivotal in helping me arrive at where and who I am now. ❤️🧙‍♀️, 🌻, 🧜🏽‍♀️, 🥷, 🦌, 👁, 🌸, 🦉, 🏜, 🥋and 🌹. You are my Avengers and you inspire me and kick ass. It takes a village, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants on the planet, Watson wrote on her Facebook page. Being able to repurpose this waste and incorporate it into my gown for the Met Gala proves the power that creativity, technology and fashion can have by working together.

Every part of the gown was produced with sustainability in mind, she explained - from the zips (recycled materials) to the inner bustier (organic cotton).

Conventional cotton is one of the highest impact crops, using more chemicals than any other crop in the world, she continued. Organic cotton on the other hand, is grown without the use of the most harmful chemicals and is therefore better for the environment and people working with cotton. The organic silk used in the lining of my gown is certified to a standard that guarantees the highest environmental and social standards throughout production.

And not for Emma the one-wear policy adopted by so many stars; the actress revealed that she plans to repurpose the five-piece look as part of the #30Wears initiative (encouraging consumers to wear an item of clothing at least 30 times).

It is my intention to repurpose elements of the gown for future use, she wrote. The trousers can be worn on their own, as can the bustier, the train can be used for a future red carpet look… I'm looking forward to experimenting with this. Truly beautiful things should be worn again and again and again.

Following Watson's collaboration, Calvin Klein also created two further sustainable looks for the Met Gala, worn by Margot Robbie and Lupita Nyong'o. While Robbie's dress was lined with organic Italian silk and featured zips made from recycled materials, Nyong'o's dress was painstakingly handcrafted in the Calvin Klein New York atelier.

It was such an amazing experience to work with the Calvin Klein team on Emma's gown and so wonderful to have her support to also push them even further and work on GCC principles for Margot and Lupita's gowns, Eco Age's Livia Firth told us. Emma is a rare example of someone who truly walks the walk, and I hugely admire her for this. Andrew Bolton, who curated this year's exhibition Manus X Machina, said that people lose sight of the materiality and artistry that into fashion today - and the GCC is truly a tribute to this. Telling the stories behind, pushing boundaries with designers, using innovative and more eco-friendly materials for a just and successful future of fashion.
