Emma Watson Official Website

One of the most exciting accounts I had the pleasure to lead during my career, was for the famous actress Emma Watson when I was working at Lightmaker UK. In 2008 we took upon the challenge of re-branding the actress's online image with a new logo, a new website and a new illustrated style inspired by her own art and her interests, at the time.

A lot of time was spend on research, moodboards, and concept designs as well on illustrations associated with the brand. Logo suggestions were also presented to go along.

Adobe, the company that makes software such as Photoshop, in 2008 wanted to sponsor a microsite for one of our clients to be used as a promotion of their latest Adobe Flash software release. The microsite was to be created purely with Adobe Flash, using their latest innovative design tools. For this I came up with a concept for an interactive Christmas microsite which provides digital gifts to the fans of Emma Watson.

We decided to use the new 'bones' feature of Flash, and so the challenge here was to create a tree that is broken into a few parts, but linked and coded in such way for users to be able to shake it and receive their gifts. In addition, I fully illustrated all elements to be used.

They also happen to have designed/maintain British actress, Emma Watson’s personal website (most famous for her role in the Harry Potter Series as “Hermione Granger”). I will be the first to admit that I’m kind of obsessed with her, be it unprofessional or not, I cannot deny it. So needless to say I’ve been following her since I was in middle school. This is where I can credit my discovery of Great Fridays. Anyway, my point is that her website that they created is a fantastic example of effective web design and is such an inspiration to me, beside the fact that its about Emma Watson. Let me indulge you:

Everything on this site page is creatively organized and relatively minimalist which I am biased towards. Each picture you see there is a flexible, expandable

done through Javascript (the source code is eye candy; its so immaculately organized). When each
expands, so does the picture with a sub-caption describing what category of information the picture link will take you to. Here’s where it gets cooler. If for some reason you don’t want to view the more arbitrary main layout, down in the bottom left hand corner of the webpage there are 2 other layout icons that allow you to view the website in whatever way the information is most communicable to you personally.

Things I respect about this website other than the creative Java work: Her name stands clearly apart, right where the eye firsts approaches the page. The navigation bar is clean with simple yet effective rollover states. The color scheme is simple which adds good contrast to all of the colorful pictures that populate the entire contents of the site. The site is unified by its typography which consists of 1 font broken into a simple hierarchy of all-caps headers with lowercase copy and special glyphs as a design element. Paralleling the nav bar at the top of the page, another link bar rests underneath the body content of the page with quick access to facebook, twitter and other various links. I could gush about this site and the person its about longer, but I’ll save you from that certain boredom.
